McNabb Speaks Out

After a frustrating and disappointing loss to the Washington Redskins on Monday night, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb had something’s to say to an HBO reporter after the game, but not about the game. McNabb told the reporter African-American quarterbacks such as himself face added pressure because there are fewer black QB’s--and because some still don’t want black athletes playing the position.

Is McNabb right or is he just making an excuse for the way he’s playing? I think McNabb is frustrated with the way the Eagles are playing and his playing performance. But to come out and make this “broad” statement about racism and criticism of African-Americans isn’t right. Sure there are only 5 starting African-American quarterbacks in the NFL, but not all of them are criticized. There are plenty of white quarterbacks who have been criticized. Hasn’t McNabb ever heard of….umm….Rex Grossman or Joey Harrington? The last time I checked they weren’t African-American and last time I checked they were getting criticized and booed as bad as McNabb.

McNabb mentioned that star quarterbacks like Payton Manning and Carson Palmer don’t get criticized as much as African-Americans do. But didn’t Manning get criticized the past few years before winning the Super Bowl? Everyone criticized Manning because he hadn’t won a playoff game, let alone a Super Bowl. And right now, McNabb isn’t nearly the caliber they are at.

It doesn’t really help that McNabb is playing in Philly, either. Philadelphia fans have always been critical of all of their sports teams. It’s been a while since the Eagles have won a Super Bowl and McNabb isn’t playing as good as he “used” to, so the fans are upset. Even hall of fame QB, Terry Bradshaw was heavily criticized in Pittsburgh. The fans hated him. I can see why McNabb is acting out because it’s hard when you don’t have the support of your fans.

I don’t think racism is the issue for African-American quarterbacks. If some get criticized, it isn’t because people have a hatred toward them or are harsher on them, it’s because of a bad performance and mechanics. McNabb is a veteran and people are criticizing him because he should make some throws that he didn’t and he should be playing better. It doesn’t help he’s coming off an injury. If racism is an issue, then why was Vince Young picked 7 picks ahead of Matt Lienart and Jamarcus Russell picked 21 picks ahead of Brady Quinn?
